A Letter from Daniel Barenboim | |||||||||||
Daniel Barenboim conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra |

I am delighted that the rich history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is now available to a wide public. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Archives contains telecasts of concerts, many especially produced for television, led by some of the greatest conductors of the twentieth century. To be able to see and hear the work of such conductors as Fritz Reiner, George Szell, Pierre Monteux, and Leopold Stokowski gives us all an opportunity to experience a high order of music making by some of this century’s most imposing musical personalities, working with one its greatest orchestras. When I became the ninth music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, I was deeply aware of its rich heritage. Seeing these videos has amplified this awareness and illustrated the greatness of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra tradition. I have long hoped that these treasures could be made available to interested music lovers throughout the world, and I am thrilled that through the efforts of Video Artists International we can now share this cultural legacy with you.
