The death of Alexei Sultanov in 2005, at the age of 35, deprived the world of a pianist some considered the greatest of his time. This live 1996 recital from Japan shows why critics praised his ability to “reach a listener like nobody else” and why the Japanese dubbed him “Demonic.” The program features works by Chopin, Scriabin, and Rachmaninoff.
