Maestro Roberto Abbado leads a 1984 performance of Donizetti’s rarely-heard “opera seria” Sancia di Castiglia at the Teatro Donizetti di Bergamo. Premiered in Naples in 1832, it tells the story of Sancia, Queen of Castille, whose husband has been killed in battle. Sancia plans to marry the Saracen prince, Ircano, when her son Garzia, who was believed to be dead, appears and claims the throne for himself. The cast includes Antonella Bandelli, Adriana Cicogna, and Franco De Grandis.
