Josef Krips Conducts
VAI, DVD 4256, $34.95

Josef Krips (1902-1974), one of the most distinguished conductors of his time, was an especially influential interpreter of the music of Mozart. A student of Weingartner, Krips held the post of permanent conductor of the Vienna State Opera from 1933-1938, and then conducted for a year at the Belgrade Opera before the Nazi régime banned him from the podium. After the war, Krips was credited with almost single-handedly rebuilding musical life in Vienna, and is considered the chief architect of the postwar Viennese Mozart style. In this live 1962 television concert, Krips is joined by an illustrious trio of Mozarteans: the Canadians Pierrette Alarie  (soprano) and Léopold Simoneau (tenor), and the eminent American pianist Malcolm Frager (1935-1991).
